In previous posts we’ve looked at, reviewed, and shared ideas on many beautiful styles of horizontal cross necklaces. We’ve explored them in various materials, colors, shapes, and sizes. We’ve talked about their popularity with celebrities who are seen wearing them and fashionable women globally sporting them as well. We’ve seen different ways they can be worn, and where to purchase them. We’ve looked at some for women, children and men, and we’ve seen what lovely gifts they can make for someone special in your life.
But if you’ve searched high and low for just the right side cross necklace for yourself or whoever you are looking for, and haven’t found just the right one, then another great alternative is to make your own.
Do-it-yourself (or DIY) projects are becoming more and more popular these days. There are many reasons for this:
- There is a great deal of personal gratification and excitement about making something, and either keeping it for yourself or gifting it to someone special. And jewelry, especially a piece that incorporates a cross symbol, can have an added personal significance and special meaning for whoever wears it.
- When you make something yourself, you have control over what it looks like in size, shape, color and design. And the result is a one-of-a-kind product that you can feel very proud of.
- Making jewelry or other craft items can be an enjoyable project to do with others. It makes for a fun social circle among friends, or can be a deeply bonding experience between mother and daughter or other relationship.
- As prices of things seem to be sky-rocketing, and the economy continues to present us all with challenges, it is often much more cost effective to make something instead of buy it. It is also a time when people look through there drawers and closets for items that can be updated by giving them new life, rather than going out and spending more hard-saved money.
If you already enjoy doing DIY projects, then making this unique piece of jewelry that turns the traditional cross necklace sideways can be a creative and fun experience with a rewarding result.
Turn Any Cross Necklace Sideways
There are a couple of different approached to making a horizontal cross necklace. You may already have a cross pendant that you like, but don’t wear for a variety of reasons. Maybe you don’t care for the chain it came with, or the chain is broken or worn, or it has no chain at all. In this case, you can re-purpose this pendant by incorporating it into your new sideways cross necklace project.
Another approach is to buy a cross pendant and a chain that you like, and use these in making your new necklace. To make the project as easy as possible, look for a pendant that has openings or holes in it as part of its design as in the photo above and video below. If the cross is solid and only has an eyelet attached to the top, you will need to have the right equipment (such as a soldering iron) to be able to attach another eyelet to the bottom of the cross. You may choose to weave the chain through the cross, as in the video, or add a clasp to each end of the chain. Some options are a little trickier for a newbie, but likely no problem if you are already experienced and equipped with jewelry making tools.

Making Other Sideways Cross Jewelry
While this article focused on making necklaces, the same principles can apply to make other pieces of jewelry as well, such as a sideways cross bracelet or earrings. Whether you already have experience making jewelry, or are new to this and interested in giving it a try, it’s sure to be a memorable experience with a resulting horizontal cross necklace that you’ll cherish.
